Services for researchers
E-identity and e-mail
AAI-account is your user account to login to the ARNES web services and the services of other service providers, who allow AAI-login. The organization can also assign you the option of e-mail usage.
Acquisition of an AAI-account
Acquire an AAI-account from your organization. AAI-account usually consists of a name and a surname, the »@« character and the domain of an organization, e.g. »name.surname@domain.si«. In order to acquire an AAI-account please contact information specialist at your organization.
AAI-account enables you to login to ARNES’ services (My Arnes Portal), eduroam network and to services of other providers.
Acquisition of an e-mail address
Computer or information specialist at your organization assigns an e-mail address to you. You can access your mailbox by your username either via Arnes webmail or via your favourite e-mail client. Arnes Webmail ensures 20 GB of space, it is ad-free and provides the highest level of privacy.
Personal Digital Certificates
An AAI-account enables you to create a personal certificate, that you can use to encode e-mails and digitally sign e-mails and documents. A certificate can be valid for up to three years.
Distribution Lists
Distribution Lists enable you to easily send simultaneous e-mails from one e-mail address to several e-mail addresses, for example to all participants in a research, removing the need to enter all the recipients’ addresses every time. You can manage the distribution list and can also define who has the right to send e-mails to the list and protect the list from unwanted e-mails (spam). By using distribution lists, you do not violate any electronic communication rules and consequently your e-mails will not be tagged as a spam.
eduroam
Wireless access to the internet at home and abroad
An AAI-account enables you to roam in the largest educational and research wireless network – eduroam, which is available in more than a 100 countries.
If your organization is associated with eduroam, you can login to your AAI-account through your laptop or a mobile device and easily connect to wireless network of any organization that has the eduroam system set up. The eduroam network encoding ensures that your network roaming is always secure.
Infrastructure Hosting
Researchers are offered infrastructure hosting services on fast, reliable and above all safe servers. We provide you a lot of disk space and an unlimited data transfer. With infrastructure hosting you avoid the expenses of maintenance and purchasing new hardware.
Server Hosting
Custom server enables you to host a virtual server. The server enables you to adapt and control the operation. You can choose an operating system and different levels of performance. The usage is intended for installation of web and other applications.
ARNES’ network member researchers can acquire a virtual server with one processor, 40 GB of disk space, 2 GB of random access memory (RAM) and a powerful 1 Gb/s internet connection. At your request, we can increase your resources to a maximum of 4 virtual CPE, 8 GB of RAM and 160 GB of disk space. Larger projects can be assigned 8 virtual CPE, 16 GB of RAM and 250 GB of disk space. You can also obtain verified digital certificates for free, that enable secure data transfer between servers and users.
Disk Space Hosting
The Arnes Shramba (Arnes Storage) service enables that researchers acquire data space at ARNES, which can be used to store data or backup copies. Arnes Shramba is especially recommended as a security backup at a secondary location. You can connect your server via s3 protocol to a remote disk and deposit a second backup copy of your system there. In case the first backup is lost or destroyed, data can still be recovered from the secondary backup copy. At ARNES, we assign you 1 TB or up to 10 TB of disk space for storing your data.
High Performance Computing Infrastructure
At ARNES, we allow the usage of our supercomputing cluster by users with high demands, who work with complex computer data processing and complex algorithms. Clusters use intermediate software and operate as a homogeneous supercomputer from a user’s perspective. The supercomputer enables a researcher to solve complex calculation tasks much faster and more efficiently.
ARNES Supercomputing Cluster Usage
Slovenian researchers can use a supercomputing cluster that we manage at ARNES for high-performance computing. The cluster involves an assembly that supports high-performance parallel computing – HPC. The use of ARNES the computing cluster is also aimed at testing the use of a cluster technology in various research projects and for teaching users and system administrators how to use technology in new research fields.
Acquisition of a New Digital Certificate for a Virtual Organization
Researchers who want to acquire access to the computing capabilities of ARNES’ cluster need a digital certificate SiGNET CA. The certificate can be obtained by any researcher, who works in Slovenia or collaborates on research projects in Slovenia, except in cases where he/she already works in an organization or a country where he/she is already eligible for an equivalent certificate. It takes up to 3 working days to issue a digital certificate and it has to be extended every year by submitting a new request. You also need membership in the applicable virtual organization, it is sufficient if you register at the General Slovene Virtual Organization.
Trainings
We organize many workshops and meetings, where we explain, how a supercomputing cluster can be used in your field of expertise.
Slovenian National Supercomputing Network – SLING
A supercomputing network is a cluster of computer groups. In supercomputing networks, computer networks are distributed so that computer capacities, used by researchers working on common projects, are shared. The basic idea is the same as the Web, with the exception that Web uses only data distribution, whereas a supercomputing network shares also computer capacity and disk space. ARNES’ Computer Cluster is a part of the Slovenian National Supercomputing Network SLING, a consortium for the development of grid computing and management of Slovene supercomputing infrastructure. ARNES coordinates operation of the SLING network, represents Slovenia in the European Grid Initiative (EGI) and as a part of the SLING network also collaborates with CECAM, CERN, CLARIN, EGI, ELIXIR, ITER, NorduGrid and PRACE organizations.
Websites and Web Collaboration
ARNES web services are available to you to publish or transmit content on the web, analyse, collaborate and create web research communities.
Creation and Management of Websites
Arnes Splet (Arnes Web) is a user-friendly web tool that enables you to quickly create a website and present a project or a blog. Arnes Splet is based on the web content management system known as WordPress platform. ARNES will take care of upgrade and security for you.
A presentation of the tool with an optional use of various plug-ins and hints and tricks can be found on the following website splet.arnes.si.
Website Analytics
Arnes Analitika (Arnes Analytics) allows you to view information about your website’s visitors. The tool enables you to find out which topics of the website attract most of the visitors, visitors’ locations, where they might get lost, etc. so you can adapt the contents of your website based on this information. Data is not shared with third parties when using the Arnes Analitika tool, which means you have complete control of the data. Obtaining the permission of visitors to your website regarding the use of cookies is therefore very easy. For users of the website content management system, Arnes Splet, the Arnes Analitika tool is already integrated and is therefore available to monitor website activity.
Online Classrooms
By using the Arnes Učilnice (Arnes Classrooms) tool you can create your own digital learning environment. The Arnes Učilnice tool enables you remote collaboration by means of forums, workshops, questionnaires, exchange of resources and video recordings as well as provide you with interactive contents. The Arnes Učilnice tool is based on the Moodle system. At ARNES, we take care of maintenance and system upgrade so you can focus on the contents that are important for the educational process.
Sending and Exchanging Large Files and Databases
The Arnes Filesender service enables you to simply and quickly exchange large files, such as databases of up to 100 GB, online. You can simultaneously share the files with several recipients and enable files to be sent to your co-workers even if they do not use Arnes’ services. This means that your e-mails will never be rejected due to large attachments and the data will be safe from third party access since they will be stored at Arnes.
Online surveys
1KA is an open source application that enables services for online surveys. The application can be used unlimitedly and free of charge for the purposes of online surveys.
